Interior door hardware rarely makes it onto a mood board. Skirting profiles and architrave rarely come up in a client’s first conversation with us, either. And yet in almost every project we complete, it’s how these details are resolved that separates a home that photographs well from one that actually lives well.

The details that do the most work

Skirting and architrave profiles, chosen well, reinforce the entire design language of a home. A bold, moulded profile brings heritage gravitas to a period renovation. A deep square-set shadowline gives a contemporary space the kind of crisp, gallery-like finish that makes every other element look more intentional. The choice between a painted MDF finish and a solid oak profile can shift the warmth of a room in ways that feel subtle but register deeply.

Doors: an underestimated detail

You open and close a door dozens of times a day. It’s a surface you move past, look through, and reach for, over and over. In a home with multiple rooms, the cumulative visual impact of your door selection is considerable.

The right internal door reinforces the rhythm of your architecture. It introduces texture where walls are plain, weight where spaces feel light, and light where hallways feel closed. These are not incidental qualities.

Some of the door types we work with most often:

Solid timber. Nothing quite replicates the sound and feel of a solid timber door closing. The weight is tactile, the warmth is genuine, and in a home where material quality matters throughout, it reads immediately.

Flush panel. The workhorse of contemporary interiors. Clean, uninterrupted, and an ideal backdrop for well-chosen hardware. Their restraint lets everything around them breathe.

Glass panel. Where light needs to travel through a home, down a hallway, into a study, across an open plan, a glass panel door maintains the sense of separation without sacrificing light. It creates a sense of depth that solid doors can’t.

Routed profiles. For spaces that sit between traditional and contemporary, a subtly detailed door profile introduces character without period pastiche. Linear grooves, geometric insets, and careful proportions can make a simple door genuinely beautiful.

Hollow core. Practical, cost-effective, and entirely appropriate in the right context. As with laminate in joinery, the key is knowing where it serves the brief well, and specifying accordingly.

Hardware: where function becomes finesse

It’s small in scale. Its effect is not. The right handle, on the right door, in the right finish, can anchor an entire room’s material palette.

We approach hardware selection the way we approach tapware: with a view to the whole. The finish on a door handle sits in conversation with the finish on a tap, a light fitting, a cabinet pull.

A few considerations we bring to every project:

Handles and knobs. Lever handles in a knurled or fluted profile bring tactile interest to a flush door. A simple, weighty knob in aged brass can turn an otherwise understated door into something memorable. The proportions matter as much as the finish.

Hinges. Concealed hinges on full-height doors create an uninterrupted surface that reads as far more resolved than the alternative. It’s a detail most people won’t consciously notice, but they’d notice its absence.

Locks and latches. High-quality mechanisms feel as good as they look. A latch that operates smoothly, a lock that engages with quiet precision: these are the details that add up to an overall sense of quality throughout a home.

The sum of the parts

What unites tapware, joinery, and now hardware and trims is the same principle. The homes that feel resolved aren’t built from a collection of individual decisions. They’re built from a series of connected ones. Each element in conversation with the next. Each finish chosen with awareness of what surrounds it.
